How Much YouTube Paid Me w/ 1 Million Views (AdSense Update!)
In this video, I give you an update on my AdSense earnings on this channel thus far! My channel has been growing a lot lately, with two videos really taking off, so I thought it was due time to give you an update with CPM, video earnings, and lifetime earnings.
AdSense Update
This channel has more than doubled in growth over the past month, mostly thanks to two videos. This one on Day Trading futures with $1,000 and this one about the short squeeze on GameStop.
They’ve far and away out-performed the rest of the videos on this channel with over 1 million views combined, so let’s see how it’s affected by AdSense revenue.
I know there’s this trend on YouTube of making videos about how much money your other videos made, but since my channel has more than doubled in size over the last 28 days, my revenue numbers have changed a lot, so I thought it was worth it to do an update. I’ll keep this short and sweet, but I do have other videos that go into more depth on the metrics and comparing both my main channel, Mango Street, and my wife’s fitness channel.
The last time I did a revenue update was near the end of November. My channel was averaging about $2,460 per month with about 33,000 subscribers. My CPM was $25.49 down from $27 previously.
What really kicked off my recent growth was my video on day trading with $1,000 posted on January 8th. This was actually my first time posting two videos in one week, which has really helped ramp up my channel’s growth, and it allows me to cover different topics in the same week, so hopefully there’s something for everyone.
I originally titled this video “Day Trading Challenge w/ $1,000.” When you publish a new video, your dashboard on YouTube shows you how your video is performing compared to your last 9 other videos. I don’t remember exactly where this one was ranked out of 10, but it didn’t seem like it was really getting the traction I hoped for. It was probably somewhere in the middle of the pack.
So I decided to change the title. The whole “challenge” part made it seem… I don’t know, just not as interesting. Instead, I thought about what would pique someone’s curiosity and encourage them to click on the video, so I changed it to “I tried day trading w/ $1,000.”
I think this title is far better – it sets the expectation that they can watch me go through this relatable experience. I’m using only $1,000 instead of a 5 or 6-figure account like a lot of day traders.
A few hours after I changed the title, the video started picking up steam. When a video performs well with your base audience – like your subscribers – the algorithm will then start suggesting the video to more and more people outside of your core audience. If it does well with those people, it will continue to be suggested and shown to more and more people. And that’s what happened here.
And real quick, just a refresher if you don’t remember or never knew, but the CPM number shows how much advertisers paid for 1,000 views. The RPM shows me what I actually make per 1,000 views after YouTube takes it’s cut.
The CPM on this video is around $20, which seems to be about the average my channel has been getting here in 2021.
It is a longer video, so it does have two mid-roll ads which helps add to that AdSense revenue.
It’s been published for almost one month and it has over 446,000 views and has earned $3,924.89.
And now onto my video explaining the short squeeze with GameStop. I wasn’t sure what to expect, because it was my third video posted that week and it went live on a Saturday night. But it was very timely, because all that next week, GameStop was just about what everyone was talking about.
It’s just under 8 minutes, so no mid-roll ads, just the pre-rolls. I could’ve talked a little slower to hit that 8 minute mark and put a mid-roll in, but no – I didn’t want to stretch the video out just for the sake of ad revenue.
It was published a week and a half ago and has over 573,000 views. It also has a lower CPM than my usual videos at around $15. But despite the lower CPM and no mid-rolls, it’s generated $4,306.17. Oh, and it’s also responsible for bringing in over 10,000 new subscribers to my channel.
Let’s now take a look at my revenue for the last 28 days. When my day trading video first went live, I made $109.51 that day. Then, you can really begin to see things start to snowball, thanks to both the video topics and posting at least twice a week. On January 15th, my channel generated $437, which surpassed my channel’s previous daily high of $234.93.
Things hit a peak of $933.90 – which is when my day trading video was really getting a lot of views. Then, when my GameStop video started getting a lot of traction, we got into the 4 digit a day territory. I hit $1300 on the 27th and then an all-time high of $1634.79 on Sunday. These numbers have been absolutely blowing my mind. This is still a small channel, but over the past 28 days it generated over $16,000 in revenue.
This is especially crazy when you compare it to our main channel Mango Street. For all of 2020, Mango Street generated just $21,000 in revenue… only $5,000 more than this channel did in the last 28 days. And for January, Mango Street had a revenue of about $1300. Notice the CPM is only $11.84 here compared to around $19 on this channel.
Alright, let’s take a look at lifetime revenue. In my last update in November, the lifetime revenue for this channel was $7,426 and two cents. So with all of the views and new subscribers I’ve received lately, my lifetime revenue now is $28,329 and 99 cents.
I know this channel has a blend of people who are more interested in the stock market and investing side of things and others that are more interested in making money in other areas, so I’m still trying to find a balance between the two. I have a lot of videos in the works – some take longer than others to do – but I definitely listen to your feedback, so let me know what you’re interested in seeing in the comments section below the video, and as always, I will try to make it happen.
I want to thank you so much for supporting this channel and watching my videos – it really means a lot to me. If you would do me a favor and hit that thumbs up button when watching, that would really help this channel out. Consider subscribing if you haven’t already and I will see you in the next one.
